Prada in the running to outfit Skico hordes

A company best known for its pricey handbags is in the running to outfit the Aspen Skiing Co.’s instructors and mountain operations workers.

Prada is one of three ski wear manufacturers trying to land the Skico account, confirmed Skico Chief Operating Officer John Norton. RLX Polo and Phenix are the others hoping to provide the ski outfits, he said.

RLX currently outfits the “pros” of the Ski and Snowboard Schools of Aspen/Snowmass. Phenix makes the outfits for mountain operations.

Ideally, Norton said, the same manufacturer would provide all the outfits. The company is hoping for that scenario when it updates its on-slope attire for the 2003-04 season.

The Skico is several months away from settling on a design and manufacturer, Norton said. In the past, the company has held design competitions among the companies in the running.

Prada became tied to Aspen at Christmastime when it opened a high-end store in town. Norton said the company is no stranger to ski wear, either.

“They outfit some European ski schools,” he said.

It’s unknown if Prada would provide little purses and handbags for Skico workers as part of its outfits.
