Powder day! 14 inches at Snowmass

ASPEN ” Snowmass picked up 14 inches of new snow overnight as the second straight weekend winter storm plowed into western Colorado. Aspen Mountain received 9 inches over the past 24 hours, according to the Aspen Skiing Co.’s Friday morning report.

Aspen Highlands received 13 inches, ensuring a powder day when it opens on Saturday. Buttermilk, also opening Saturday, received 7 inches.

A winter storm warning remains in effect for the mountains surrounding Aspen/Snowmass until 6 p.m. Saturday. Snow accumulations of 3 to 5 inches are forecast on Friday, with areas of blowing snow and southwest winds of 10 to 15 mph. Friday night, another 3 to 5 inches is expected, and it’s the same story on Saturday, according to the weather service.

Winds are expected to pick up Friday night and Saturday, with gusts of about 35 mph on Saturday, the weather service said. Snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches are forecast Saturday night; a 50 percent chance of additional snow is forecast on Sunday.

As the storm moves out Sunday, colder temperatures are expected to settle in.
