Potential candidates emerge in Basalt council races

Aspen Times staff report
Aspen, CO Colorado

BASALT – Several Basalt residents are testing the waters as the Friday deadline nears for entry into three Town Council races.

Karin Teague, Mary Holley and Patrick Maley were the latest town residents to pick up nomination petitions for possible candidacy. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean they are running.

Teague said Monday that she is still weighing her decision and plans to make an announcement by Thursday. Holley and Maley couldn’t be reached for comment Monday. Holley picked up a petition from town hall on Thursday; Maley picked his up on Monday.

Candidates must submit their petitions to the town clerk by 5 p.m. Friday, March 5. The petitions must be signed by 25 qualified Basalt voters. The election is April 6.

Two residents picked up nomination petitions earlier in the process but decided against bids. Bud Eylar and Yalonda Long said they decided not to run.

Anne Freedman and Glenn Rappaport picked up petitions and announced they will run.

Two of the three incumbents won’t seek re-election while the third is uncertain. Chris Seldin and Amy Capron announced they won’t run again. Gary Tennenbaum said he is still debating whether to seek another term.

All three seats are for four-year terms.
