Pool problems

(Editor’s note: This letter was originally addressed to the Aspen City Council.)Dear Editor:Is the ARC about to spring a leak?I am very aware of the plans afoot to add new outdoor water features to our existing ARC facility. I know that we have funds already appropriated but seriously question adding additional water events to a situation that is hardly paying its way at present. I believe that the facility is already costing our community around $750,000 a year. The possible additions, no matter what scheme is chosen, will cost well over $1.5 million.I’m especially nervous about a “Surf Pool” … at well over a million dollars, that literally only one person can use at a time. Grottoes … more “lazy river” outdoor possibilities … will we heat these in winter? … Are we in the Disneyland business? I thought that keeping our pools inside was very thoughtful knowing the dangers of too much sun damage. We presently have the ability to open the outside doors and let in fresh air without subjecting our pool users to excess sun exposure. Also, with suggested outdoor additions, we no longer have staging area for our swim competitions. Wasn’t swim competition one of the main reasons to have our Olympic-sized pool?I would suggest that the allocated money could be better used by improving existing problems at the ARC. Adding more amusements doesn’t address the fact that the facility already costs the taxpayers more than it earns. Because we may want the moon doesn’t mean that we should have it.Please think seriously about purpose, environment and practicality before adding additional financial obligation to our budget.Barbara ConviserAspen
