Poll: Keep the moratorium

Aspen Times Staff Report

Maybe it’s the time of year, or maybe it’s the quality of the question, but few readers responded to this week’s Aspen Times Readers Poll.

This week we addressed the Aspen City Council’s decision not to extend a moratorium on demolition of 26 structures being considered for historical designation. We asked people whether the council should have let the moratorium expire.

The response was scant, but people came out in favor of keeping the moratorium until the city can figure out which buildings to preserve. Twenty readers, or 61 percent, said no to the question, while 13, or 39 percent, answered yes.

This week we will again focus on city government.

The city streets department has been bombarded with complaints recently about the icy conditions of our streets. Unable to use magnesium chloride, the department has yet to find a solution that will adequately clear the streets of snow and ice.

Another section of the community believes people who complain about icy streets and sidewalks shouldn’t be living in a mountain town. Snow and ice is simply a reality of living at 8,000 feet, they say.

So this week we ask: Should the city take whatever steps are necessary to make sure its streets and sidewalks are snow- and ice-free?

Respond by going to our Web site at http://www.aspentimes.com, or by calling 925-3414, extension 218.
