Polis urges Congress to pass DREAM Act

DENVER – Colorado congressman Jared Polis is calling on Congress to pass a bill that would allow young people in the country illegally a chance to gain legal status.

Polis gave a speech on the DREAM Act on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday.

The legislation would allow illegal immigrants brought to the United States before they were 16 a chance to gain legal status if they join the military or attend college.

Polis said young people shouldn’t be held responsible for their parents’ decision to enter the country illegally.

On Monday, the Denver City Council backed a proclamation urging Congress to pass the bill – the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act.
