GLENWOOD SPRINGS ” Authorities are seeking the community’s help to identify the suspects involved in Sunday’s shooting of a Glenwood Springs police officer and have released a composite sketch of a person of interest in the case.

A reward of up to $4,000 is offered to anyone with information leading to arrest or prosecution of the suspects. Anyone can call 945-0101 with information and remain anonymous.

“None of us wants such an action to go without the criminal being held accountable for his actions in a court of law,” Police Chief Terry Wilson wrote in an e-mail. “And we need the help of our community in solving this case.”

The suspects are described as Hispanic males, both 5-feet, 5-inches to 5-7 in height; both weighing about 155 pounds; with brown hair and brown eyes. One suspect was wearing a black or a dark blue hooded sweat shirt, dark pants and black and white Adidas tennis shoes. The other suspect was wearing a red, hooded sweat shirt with dark pants and lace-up boots.

Garfield County Sheriff’s Office community relations deputy Tanny McGinnis sent an e-mail out relaying expressions of concern and support for law enforcement that she said she’d received from dozens of callers.

“I felt like I needed to stop right now and call and make sure to tell the officers in this area that protect me and my family just how thankful we are for them,” said one citizen, according to her e-mail.

According to police, the officer was doing a visual check of a storage area just south of the airport when he saw someone jump off a fence and then noticed two males walking away from him. The officer reportedly asked them to stop several times; one of the men turned and fired multiple shots, hitting the officer once in the chest from about 10 to 20 feet away. He was wearing a bulletproof vest and wasn’t seriously injured.

The officer returned multiple gunshots as the two men fled south, but was unsure if he hit either man, Wilson said.
