Police looking for aerosol arsonist

Aspen Times writer

Aspen police are investigating two arson incidents that occurred Saturday night near the Snowflake Inn and Limelite Lodge in Aspen.Sgt. Steve Smith told The Aspen Times that police responded to the scene at about 9 p.m. Saturday night after receiving reports from people walking by.Smith said the APD believes that the fires, one in a dumpster and one in a portable toilet, were set by a teenager or teenagers lighting paper with aerosol spray cans. Such cans are used to apply hairspray, ant killer and a number of other chemicals.Smith said the evidence indicates the fires were started by young people. Police aren’t sure how many teens were involved. The city has an 11 p.m. curfew for teens under 18. Except for damage to the floor of the portable toilet, there was no property damage. Smith said the fear is that small fires can quickly become full-blown structure fires, threatening property and people.Smith said anyone with information that might lead to identifying the person who started the fires can notify the police department at 920-5400 or the fire department at 925-5532.”We’re asking for the public’s help – if they saw anyone loitering around the area,” Smith said.
