Police ID second ‘person of interest’
Aspen, CO Colorado
BASALT ” Police have identified the second “person of interest” in the June 26 shooting incident at the 7-Eleven but haven’t located him yet, Basalt Police Chief Keith Ikeda said Thursday.
The man, whose name wasn’t released, lives in El Jebel, Ikeda said. Police haven’t been able to find him there.
“Nobody has seen him since that evening of the shooting,” Ikeda said.
A Basalt man was identified as the other person of interest in the case. Police questioned him soon after the incident, but he claimed no knowledge of the shooting.
No arrests have been made in the case, although Ikeda said his department continues the investigation.
Two Latino males came into the 7-Eleven at about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 26 and asked cashier Bruno Kirchenwitz if he was the man who wears a baseball cap that says, “U.S. Border Patrol.” Kirchenwitz acknowledged he was although he wasn’t wearing it at the time. He said he wore the hat to and from work but not on duty.
Kirchenwitz said the men threatened to show him what they felt about the hat and warned that they would hang around outside the store until he got off. They departed a short time later without incident.
Kirchenwitz’s shift ended at 10 p.m. and he left the store to catch a bus about 15 minutes later. Five shots were fired through a front window into the cashier’s area of the store at 11:10 p.m. None of the five people in the store at the time, including a different cashier, were injured.
A car that was seen speeding away from Two Rivers Road after the shooting may be the same car the two Latino males departed in after they had words with Kirchenwitz, according to police.
Kirchenwitz was fired from his job July 9. He said a representative of 7-Eleven claimed his dismissal had nothing to do with the shooting incident.

: The Colorado Department of Transportation gives Aspen’s roundabout a poor grade in terms of level of service so it’s thinking about making changes. But first, a study or two must be done.
