Police find stolen car by river in Snowmass Canyon
The Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office responded to a crashed vehicle in Snowmass Canyon on Sunday afternoon that turned out to be a car that was reported stolen in Aspen in November.
Jeff Lumsden, patrol director for the Sheriff’s Office, said the 1996 white Ford Explorer was discovered by fishermen down by the river in Snowmass Canyon. When the call first came in, responders didn’t know if anyone was in the car, so multiple first responders were dispatched to the scene.
Lumsden said the car appears to have been at the Snowmass Canyon location for some time. There was no one in the vehicle when responders arrived on the scene.
The Aspen Police Department will take over the investigation, Lumsden said. The Colorado State Patrol also will complete an accident reconstruction.
