Polar Revolution looking for a home

ASPEN Although it’s not in the direct line of fire, the sporting goods store Polar Revolution is feeling the effects of a moratorium on interior spaces in the city’s commercial core.According to a letter to the City Council from attorneys Krabacher and Sanders, the South Hunter Street store’s lease expires in April, and the owners cannot afford an “impending substantial increase in its rent.”Without a suitable place to relocate, the letter states, the store might close, marking the loss of another locally serving business. Polar Revolution has served “a wide ranging clientele” since 1997, the letter states, “in particular, Aspen’s youth.”The attorneys represent a group of people who recently purchased the subgrade space in the Aspenhof Building at 520 E. Cooper Ave., the current home of Texas Red’s barbecue. One of the buyers co-owns Polar Revolution, and the group hopes to remodel the Texas Red’s space, dividing it into two spaces, one of which would house Polar Revolution. But those changes might not be allowed under the current moratorium, which is scheduled to run into the summer, beyond the end of Polar Revolution’s current lease. The attorneys have asked the council to consider an amendment that would allow the remodel to occur, thereby saving another locally owned and locally serving business, which was part of the council’s intent of the moratorium in December.
