Plenty to breathe

Dear Editor:Sven Alstrom authored “No Good News” in the Jan. 10 Aspen Daily News and “Oxygen Depletion” the Jan. 12 Aspen Times. I’m stunned at how manipulative and hysterical these articles are. Just to set the record straight, we are not running out of oxygen, which is 21 percent of the atmosphere, by converting it to carbon dioxide, which is 0.04 percent of the atmosphere. As carbon dioxide levels rise, plants and algae flourish, converting it back to oxygen anyway and in the process massively increasing food stocks.Since 2002, whole earth temperatures have actually DROPPED, not increased (see the MSU site).Just to keep global warming in perspective, the sum total from all causes, including the contribution from the variable star we live under (the sun), is 1 degree Farenheit since 1860, of which man might be responsible for about 0.12 degrees. The last time carbon dioxide levels were this low was just before the earth glaciated completely over, called the “Snowball Earth” killing all surface plant and animal life, total extinction, some 600 million years ago. It only escaped this fate because CO2 levels rose hugely over 10 million years due to volcanism. What is the agenda of these people, the elite media, mostly liberal, are on the greenhouse gas theory, but for political expediency, not fact. The facts? We (actually our future) will survive until a meteorite wipes us out, or the sun burns out, but certainly not from the effects of “global warming.” Should a person believe in reincarnation, that person can be present when it happens.Stay calm. Support North American energy development, exploration, and research. That’s a much more serious problem than Sven’s panicky Chicken Little concerns.Mike MasonCedaredge
