Plans in works to drill near Tetons

JACKSON, Wyo. ” A plan to drill for natural gas on the Hoback Rim near the Wyoming Range will be the subject of an open house in Jackson on Monday.

Plans call for allowing 136 gas wells on 17 well pads spread over about 10,000 acres in Bridger-Teton National Forest.

A proposal published by the U.S. Forest Service says that to do the drilling, Plains Exploration and Production Co. would need to disrupt about 400 acres and build 15 miles of road.

Environmentalists say the new roads would cut into one of the largest roadless areas in Bridger-Teton National Forest. Energy industry officials say the area isn’t roadless but already is crisscrossed with four-wheel-drive tracks.

The open house will be from 4-8 p.m. at the Virginian Lodge in Jackson.
