Librarians are emerging as the champions — both in the upcoming documentary “Librarians,” which shines a light on book bans and will be featured at the 46th Aspen Filmfest this month, as well as in the local Pitkin County Library’s festive open house that happened recently for the local community.
The Pitkin County Library open house took place on Thursday, Sept. 11 — the second annual celebration in honor of Library Card Sign-Up Month. This year’s event was moved up from its usual November timing to take advantage of warmer weather.

“We used to do a party in winter for our volunteers, but we decided to move it up to September and invite the whole community and give back to the community,” Library Director Genevieve Smith said. “It’s great music and great food to thank our patrons.”
The well-attended event brought together music, free food, free library merchandise, and community members for an opportunity to enroll or renew library cards and engage with others. Library cards are available to anyone with an ID, regardless of residency.

The celebration featured live music performed by Mack Bailey, Rich Ganson, and Randall Utterback in The Dunaway open-air room, with some locals even gathering outside with their pets to enjoy the performances on the warm autumn afternoon.
