Pitkin County voter turnout low so far

ASPEN – With a little more than 10 percent of Pitkin County’s voters casting ballots so far in this fall’s mail-in election, county commissioners on Wednesday urged the populace to vote.

According to a tally from the county clerk and recorder’s office, 1,517 ballots had been returned by midday Wednesday. About 10,500 were mailed out for the Nov. 1 election.

The election features a relatively light ballot, with local school board and Colorado Mountain College director races, a state tax measure to fund education, the renewal and increase of the county’s Healthy Community Fund tax, and, for Re-1 voters, a tax measure to support the downvalley school district. A handful of other referendum questions are also being posed to voters.

The education funding measures and the Healthy Community Fund tax are critical issues, said Commissioner George Newman.

“I don’t think that we can be complacent about this vote,” he said, noting early returns in the Garfield County mail-in election equate to a 25 percent turnout. “We can do better and we need to do better,” Newman said.

County voters should keep in mind that time is running short to put their ballot in the mail (it requires two stamps, by the way) and get it to the clerk’s office by 7 p.m. on Election Day.

Ballots can also be dropped off before Nov. 1 directly at the clerk’s office and deposited through the office door’s mail slot over the weekend, said Clerk and Recorder Janice Vos Caudill.

There will be no polling places on Election Day, but ballots can be dropped off at the clerk’s office from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. In addition, on Nov. 1 only, voters may drop off ballots at St. Peter’s of the Valley Episcopal Church in Basalt and at Snowmass Village Town Hall, also from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
