Pitkin County to reward weed pickers

Aspen Times Staff Report
Aspen, CO Colorado

PITKIN COUNTY ” Pitkin County’s land management department, along with the open space and trails division, have teamed up with local nurseries to hand out free coupons to county residents in exchange for what are known as “ornamental noxious weeds” such as myrtle spurge, oxeye daisy, dame’s rocket, scentless chamomile and absinth wormwood.

The program is designed to encourage landowners to trade in their noxious weeds and use the coupons to buy “appropriate native or noninvasive species,” according to an announcement from the county.

To participate, bring up to two full, 13-gallon bags of weeds to the county landfill or the county public works building (next to the Roaring Fork Transportation Agency bus barn west of the Aspen Airport Business Center), and get a $20 coupon for each bag.

For more information, contact Crystal Yates-White, Pitkin County land manager, at 920-5214.
