Pitkin County seeks input on Aspen Veteran’s Park makeover

Staff report

The construction of a new Pitkin County administration and law enforcement building and the remodel of the existing Courthouse Plaza has created the opportunity to make improvements to Veteran’s Memorial Park located between the Courthouse and Courthouse Plaza.

Local veterans under the guidance of longtime local Lt. Col. Dick Merritt have met with Pitkin County and architects for the project and have given their blessing to initial concepts for the park. Pitkin County officials are now looking for feedback from the general public on the project.

Concept drawings were shared with the public at a Veterans Day service at the park Nov. 11 and while the reception to the concepts was positive, an opportunity to comment online has been created.

The public is asked to go to http://www.pitkin countyconnect.com to view architectural concepts and give feedback.

Portions of the project already are underway, including the removal of rose bushes that lined the entrance to the park. The rose bushes are being preserved at a local greenhouse for transplanting back onto the park near the completion of the project.
