Pitkin County eyes midvalley purchase that would benefit families of Lazy Glen

Pitkin County is considering the purchase of 40 acres across the Roaring Fork River from Lazy Glen subdivision.

Pitkin County is closing in on a purchase of land along the Roaring Fork River that would allow eventual construction of a bridge that would provide safe access to the Rio Grande Trail for 100 families living in the Lazy Glen subdivision.

The county Open Space and Trails Board of Trustees voted Thursday to advise the county commissioners to approve funding for the $2.59 million purchase. If the deal is completed, the county will acquire 40 acres on the north side of the river.

The county commissioners will review a proposed ordinance authorizing the purchase Wednesday.

Gary Tennenbaum, assistant director for the program, said efforts have been made in the past to acquire the property. In addition to preserving land along the river, it would give Lazy Glen residents a chance to access the popular pedestrian and cycling trail without traveling on Highway 82 or driving by vehicle to a trailhead.

Lazy Glen is about 2 miles east of Basalt sandwiched between the highway and river. No access exists to the Rio Grande Trail immediately across the river.

The 40-acre property that the open space program wants to acquire is across the river from the eastern half of Lazy Glen. The targeted property extends farther upvalley from Lazy Glen. The acreage includes river frontage where the open space program already holds a fishing easement. It also has a barn and a 3,500-square-foot house. The barn would be used to store equipment used to groom the Rio Grande Trail for Nordic skiing in the winter.

The Open Space and Trails program is seeking authorization from the county commissioners to sell the home. Development rights would be extinguished on two vacant lots on the property. The property also would come with water rights, which could be used for agricultural uses.
