Pileups close I-70 in Glenwood Canyon

GLENWOOD SPRINGS ” Two pileups involving more than 30 vehicles closed Interstate 70 in Glenwood Canyon for close to two hours Thursday evening.

Despite multiple damaged vehicles, however, just two people suffered minor injuries; they were taken to Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs as a precautionary measure, said Sgt. Richard Armstrong of the Colorado State Patrol.

“From what I understand, the injuries were minor,” Armstrong said. “Throughout this whole thing, we were pretty blessed that everybody got out fairly unscathed.”

The bigger pileup occurred when an eastbound semitractor-trailer jackknifed near exit 123 ” two miles west of the Hanging Lake Tunnels ” at about 5:20 p.m.

“It shut down everything,” Armstrong said.

Some 20 to 25 vehicles, including other semis, were involved in multiple accidents as drivers attempted to avoid crashing into the jackknifed semi, he said. Armstrong blamed the weather and people driving too fast for conditions for the accidents.

The left, eastbound lane was reopened at about 7:15 p.m. to allow traffic to move. Crews were still on scene removing vehicles as of 9 p.m., and Armstrong estimated the other lane would reopen by 10 p.m.

At the same location, but on the westbound lanes, a five-car accident occurred as crews worked on getting the eastbound lanes open. No injuries were reported.

A spring snowstorm that hit Colorado Thursday resulted in slick roads and pileups around the state.
