Photographer and climber Cory Richards spoke on Friday as part of the Wheeler Opera House’s Changemaker Speaker Series in Aspen.
Having grown up in an outdoors family in Utah, Richards overcame personal hardship to become one of the more celebrated mountaineers in recent years. Along with reaching the top of Mount Everest, he is known for becoming the first and only American to summit Gasherbrum II, the 13th highest peak in the world.
On the descent, Richards and his climbing partners were swept up in an avalanche, with all surviving. A photo Richards took of himself moments after the avalanche was used as a cover shot for National Geographic’s 125th anniversary edition.
Richards got into photography along with climbing, and went on to work for various publications, notably National Geographic, and is now a published author and mental health advocate.
