VAIL, Colo. – Police say a 33-year-old man crossing Interstate 70 near Vail was struck and killed by a vehicle Wednesday night.

The accident happened around 9 p.m. near the West Vail exit at mile marker 174, closing the highway for about four hours.

According to Chris Botkins of the Vail Police Department, West Vail resident Jesse Canestorp was trying to cross the interstate – apparently from the south side of the highway to the north – when he was struck by an SUV traveling in the right lane of the westbound lanes.

Botkins said Canestorp was pronounced dead at the scene, but that an autopsy, including toxicology tests, will be performed.

Botkins said the accident remains under investigation and didn’t identify the driver involved. But, he said, there was no initial evidence the driver had been using drugs or alcohol and no charges had been filed as of Thursday morning.

The highway reopened at 1:30 a.m. Traffic was diverted to North Frontage Road while the interstate was closed.
