Passing the baton

Dear Editor:The Roaring Fork Community is invited to the American Cancer Society Relay for Life Kick Off Celebration. If you would like to learn more about this annual summertime event that honors cancer survivors, remembers loved ones who have lost their lives to cancer, and raises money for the fight against cancer, please come to our Spring Kick Off Celebration. The Kick Off is an opportunity to get information about the Relay for Life, register teams and sign up to be a volunteer. The Kick Off Celebration will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 2, at the Roaring Fork High School in Carbondale. There will be drawings and refreshments for everyone who attends. We will also be giving away some great door prizes for anyone who registers their team at the Kick Off.Relay For Life is a fun-filled overnight event that will be held Aug. 10 to 11 at Roaring Fork High School in Carbondale. During the relay, teams of eight to 15 members walk or run relay-style through the night around the high school track. The relay also provides an excuse to have fun and get a little crazy (for a great cause) with a group of your family, friends or co-workers. As one of our Team Captains from the 2006 relay stated so eloquently, “that was so much fun. I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so much in my life.”My guess is that most of you have been affected by cancer in some way or another. After losing my father-in-law to lung/bone cancer in 2005 my husband and I decided to get involved in the Relay as a way to honor his memory and to turn our overwhelming sad feelings into something positive. After initially participating as a team captain in 2005, I served as the event chair for the 2006 relay and will be the team recruitment chair for the 2007 relay. If you have ANY questions about putting together a team or participating in other ways, please feel free to call me at 384-2490 or check out our website at more information on cancer, call the American Cancer Society at (800) ACS-2345, available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, or visit to see you at the April Kick Off and the August Relay for Life!Lauren GuerieraTeam Recruitment ChairGlenwood Springs
