Participate in caucuses
If you registered as a Democrat before Dec. 5 of last year, please attend your precinct caucus on Feb. 5 and participate in the presidential and senate preference polls.
Registration begins at 6:30 p.m. and voting begins at 7 p.m. Eagle County residents will meet at the Eagle County Building in El Jebel. Pitkin County residents will meet at Rio Grande Place. Woody Creek Precinct 7 will meet at the Woody Creek Community Center, and Carbondale residents of Garfield County will meet at the Carbondale Middle School.
Beside Mark Udall, Mark Benner is running to be the democratic senate candidate.
Benner is a school teacher and an active progressive democrat. He believes in holding George W. Bush accountable, withdrawing troops from Iraq, establishing a single-payer health care system, enacting campaign finance reform and stopping privatization of public services through companies like Blackwater. Benner’s political philosophy reflects that of Dennis Kucinich.
Eagle County is part of Congressional District 2, thus we have input on our U.S House of Representatives candidate. They are successful entrepreneur, businessman, education champion and philanthropist Jared Polis; environmentalist Will Shafroth (he is petitioning onto the ballot) and career politician Joan Fitz-Gerald. In his early thirties, Polis founded successful Internet businesses, served as chairman of our state board of education, fought for increased spending on education, founded several educational initiatives, co-chaired a coalition to pass ethics reform in Colorado and spent last Thanksgiving visiting Iraq, etc.

There is a lot of pent up energy among hikers and bikers to get into the high country, but snow fields, avalanche debris and high stream crossings are presenting challenges later than usual. Forest rangers with the Aspen-Sopris District provide trail condition reports that are updated each week so hikers and backpackers aren’t caught unaware.
