Aspen Times Staff Report

The Aspen Initiative of the Assets for Colorado Youth program is asking local parents for help.

The group recently sent request forms to local parents of school-aged children, asking them to participate in an assets survey of kids throughout the valley. Parents are being urged to return the signed forms so the surveys may then be distributed.

The survey is being conducted by the Search Institute, the lead organization of the Assets for Youth Colorado initiative. It will provide area schools and communities with information about how students spend their time, school and community life, youth participation in risk-taking behaviors, parents’ perspectives, and the effectiveness of exposure to asset-building community efforts.

Search Institute has identified 40 developmental assets that all youths need in their lives to succeed. They are positive experiences, opportunities, and values that help ensure children and adolescents grow up to be responsible, caring and confident. The survey, the second in a 4-year study of sixth- through 12th-graders in the Aspen, Roaring Fork and Parachute school districts, merely acts as a progress report.

Parents who received a copy of the survey consent form, but have since misplaced it, are asked to call the Assets for Colorado Youth office at 1-888-543-7871 and leave a message with their name, address and child’s name.
