Parade of veterans marches on

This year marks the 140th anniversary of Gettysburg.

On every Veterans Day, (the 11th day, 11th month) we give special honor and remembrance to our fallen comrades who served with us and made the ultimate sacrifice.

Eleven days from this day we will observe the 40th anniversary of the death of President John F. Kennedy. As we recall that terrible event, let us not forget his wartime service as a naval officer in the South Pacific. This Veterans Day we reflect on his words:

“Let the word go forth from this time and place, to friend and foe alike, that the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans ” born in this century, tempered by war, disciplined by hard and bitter peace, proud of our ancient heritage.”

Today a new generation defends our freedom in Iraq and Afghanistan. Each morning we hear of new casualties and wonder if they will ever end. We ask ourselves: Why are they there? What are we doing there? When will they come home? When will they (our government) ever learn? As a veteran, I know that they will endure, they will prevail and they will come home.

So this be our prayer: That the long parade of veterans will end, when there is real “Peace on Earth” and good will toward men and nations.
