Paper’s reporting was accurate

Dear Editor:

In his recent letter to the editor, Glenn Rappaport accused reporter Scott Condon of misrepresenting his record and favoring the mayoral candidacy of Jacque Whitsitt (“Biased reporting by the Times,” Feb. 29, The Aspen Times).

I have reason to know that Condon’s reporting was accurate. I was first appointed to the Basalt Town Council to fill Rappaport’s seat. After being elected in April, Rappaport resigned in June when members of the council suggested it was inappropriate for him represent a client before the council. He later claimed he left because of family obligations, but there is no indication that his family situation had changed in two months.

I also have good reason to know that Rappaport did not inform the council of his employment by the developer of the Pan and Fork mobile-home-park site. I currently serve on the council and did not learn of his employment until the day before Condon’s newspaper article appeared. Moreover, Rappaport has stayed in the meeting room and taken part in discussion of the project although this is considered inappropriate behavior for an elected official.

While I have not always gotten “good press” from The Aspen Times, I have never found Condon’s reporting and quotations to be inaccurate.
