Paper trail, please

Dear Editor:(This letter was originally addressed to Gov. Bill Owens.)The life blood of a democracy is a fair and verifiable voting system. To be verifiable, the voting system must provide a paper record of each vote: a paper trail. There are bills before Congress that would mandate the use of paper record-producing voting machines in presidential elections. The coming election promises to be a very close one. There may be demands for recounts and examinations of ballots. Without paper records, there can be a disaster of enormous proportions, worse than the confusion and resentment that followed the mess in Florida in 2000.I beg you, in the name of democracy, to work to move some kind of legislation to mandate, order, require paper records of this presidential election, and all federal, state, county and city elections in the future.
