Outside audit unnecessary

Dear Editor:

Why is it not surprising that the city of Aspen has approved a $40,000 expenditure on an outside audit that will “deal solely with whether the city could have done better” in building Phase I of the Burlingame housing project? Do we really need to spend $40,000 (a stated minimum estimate) to find out what we already know? Perhaps more important analyses would be those of the legalities of the erroneous cost estimates and resulting fiscal disaster, as well as of the city’s future role as a housing developer.
