Outfitted: Time for aprés

With the holidays behind us and winter in full swing, it’s time to shine at that quintessential winter pastime that Aspen does better than anybody: aprés skiing. Whether hitting the town or cozying up with a Toddy around the fireplace, below are some items I’m loving as I peel off my ski boots and celebrate those hard-earned turns:
1. Fjallraven Nuuk Parka
It can be difficult at times to transition to the inactivity of aprés when I’m still wearing my clammy ski bundle that I’ve been sporting on the hill all day. To combat this, I tend to peel off my ski shells and put on a giant parka. This one from Fjallraven has been a new favorite for its bum and thigh coverage, synthetic padding, fleece-lined hood, two-way zipper, and giant pockets. It’s waterproof, windproof, and is now sustainably produced without PFAs. The faux-fur edging on the hood is removable if that’s not your style. It feels and performs like a substantial Nordic parka that you can imagine hard-core mushers wearing. Some reviewers have complained about the zipper being difficult, but I haven’t had any trouble so far. Available in women’s and men’s sizes and colors.

2. North Face Shellista V Mid Waterproof Boots
When it’s finally time to shed your cumbersome ski boots, slipping into something comfortable can be a euphoric experience; but if you’re aprésing with the pros, you still need something substantial. I’ve been loving The North Face’s redesign of its classic winter Shellista boot. An internal waterproof membrane along with seam-seal construction keeps the muck out and the feet dry, and the insulation adds an extra level of warmth. The rubber section is extra durable, and the deep sole lugs bring an extra element of stability for icy streets and sidewalks. Not only high-functioning and practical, the Shellista is a looker for those hoping for a little boost of aprés flair. With a high-pile fleece collar and full-grain leather and suede, the boot fits right in with the Aspen fashionistas.

3. Paka Sebastian Crew Socks
Along with the joy of ditching your ski boots, I highly recommend switching out your socks, as well. This alpaca-fiber and tencel-blend sock from Paka is my new favorite for its unbelievably soft feel and unmatched odor resistance. Named after Paka’s mascot, Sebastian the alpaca, the socks feature fun alpaca and mountain graphics. Cozy but functional, Paka says the Sebastian should be used for hiking, relaxing, jumping, climbing, working, sleeping, sliding, dancing, skating, playing, and livin’. I’d say that covers most of the bases except skiing, but Paka sells a special Sebastian ski sock for that one.

4. Hestra Bernard Gloves
When you’re on the patio, holding your Aperol Spritz with those bulky ski gloves can be a challenge, so I recommend slipping your hands into these luxurious lambskin suede gloves from Hestra. Soft and light, the Bernard has a timeless look, is hand-sewn for a tailored fit, and features decorative stitching on the back of the hand. The suede side of the leather is turned outwards, while the fluffy lambskin envelops your hand in warmth on the inside. The glove can be worn straight, or the cuff can be folded over to feature the internal white lining for an alternative look. As with many leather or suede gloves, these need a little extra TLC to keep in pristine condition, but it’s worth the trouble for the sophisticated look and feel the Bernard provides. I recommend paying close attention to the sizing chart and measuring carefully to fine-tune your size. Available in three different colors.

5. Amundsen Hut 1/2-Zip and Pant Set
Appropriately named as an homage to mountain huts, this set is exactly what I’d want to wear while sitting around the fire playing games and drinking libations with friends. Constructed from a two-way wool terry loop knit, the feel isn’t too scratchy like some wool can be. With cotton and polyester included, the feel is soft and warm while having just enough give for comfort. The top has a zippered chest pocket and the pant has hand-warmer pockets in the front along with an elastic waistband and drawcord. I love the classically simple look of these and that they feel like putting on a pair of pajamas without looking too casual. Available in women’s and men’s sizes and colors.
$199 for the top, $179 for the pant, AmundsenSports.com
