Our double bind

Dear Editor:(Re: “The larger battle in Iraq,” op-ed, Nov. 15.)Rendering a fair and balanced editorial opinion on how to gain Sunni cooperation in the January elections while Fallujah is being systematically gutted by our armed forces is like discussing where to hang a picture in the bedroom upstairs when a fire has already broken out in the basement. The situation in Fallujah is so fascinating precisely because it mirrors back to us the double bind we’ve gotten into in Iraq: How can we get a vital segment of the population to participate in free elections by pointing a gun at their heads and marching them to the polls?Joel BrenceAspen
