Ouch! | AspenTimes.com

Wow! Ouch! Did I get spanked by Peter Frey’s letter to the editor or what (Aspen Times, Oct. 21)? He responded to my letter against two libraries. If you didn’t get a chance to read it, you only need the last sentence.

After a diatribe that pretty much called me a big fat liar, he wrote, “And if Jim would apply for a library card, he could borrow reading material at the Basalt library that might engender a respect for accurate research.”

Man, what if my mom saw that? I’ve been 45 days trying to get my ex-girlfriend to take me back and now that’s wrecked, too.

On the other hand, I do respect a good slam even if it is aimed at me. I think Peter’s letter qualifies for “Letter of the Year.” It was fantastic.

But, why did Peter sign his wife’s name to it? Ruth couldn’t have composed that letter if the entire library board swept into her house like some literary swat team and held her at gunpoint. We all know Ruth hasn’t got a mean bone in her body. Everyone in Basalt loves Ruth Frey.

Here’s what we now know: A building suitable for 20,000 more valley residents is OK. Raising library taxes by 537 percent is OK. A $5 million public building on leased land is OK. Forcing everyone except bowlers to drive to this building is OK.
