Organist Kurt Schakel to perform Monday at Aspen Community Church

Staff report
Kurt Schakel

Organist Kurt Schakel will play a free recital at 8 p.m. Monday at Aspen Community Church.

Schakel was the consultant who advised and supervised installation of the church’s 30-rank pipe organ in 1999. The organ is one of the largest on the Western Slope.

His program will feature lighter compositions that demonstrate the tonal resources of the instrument. He also will meet with Aspen Music School students and others at 1 p.m. Tuesday in a lecture from the organ console on how to register organ stops and the differences between organ and piano keyboard techniques.

Both events are free. Donations to help support the church’s recital program are welcome.

The final program of the summer series is Aug. 8 with Joseph Galema, faculty member of the Lamont School of Music at Denver University.

For more information, contact the church at 970-925-1571.
