Open Space and Trails votes to advance Emma Farms funds

Staff report

The Pitkin County Open Space and Trails Board of Trustees voted 4-0 Thursday to recommend that the Pitkin County commissioners approve funding for a purchase of a conservation easement on a midvalley ranch.

The open space program has negotiated buying a conservation easement on about 50 acres on the Emma Farms property at the elbow where Emma Road and Hooks Lane converge. The easement would sterilize four homesites that were approved in 2006, according to Dale Will, open space program director. The land would continue to be used for cattle grazing and growing hay.

Will said the purchase is attractive as a way to preserve ranching and views in the heart of Emma.

The contract is for $2 million. Pitkin County will approach Eagle County for a contribution since three of the four homesites on the property are in Eagle County. Will also has asked Basalt for a contribution and will prepare a request for a $700,000 grant from Great Outdoors Colorado.
