One last chance

Aspen Times Staff

This is it boys and girls: last chance to get lift-served freshies. If the forecast held true, you woke up to 4 or 5 inches of new snow, with more on the way throughout the day. In addition to some powder, both Aspen and Snowmass are holding closing parties this afternoon. The festivities at Snowmass get under way at noon, with the Fusionpipe closing party at the Spider Sabich Race Arena next to the halfpipe. Beer, burgers and a DJ will precede the final Budweiser Hi-Fi concert of the season, featuring North Coast Underground. These surf bums and adrenaline junkies from Point Arena, Calif., play a mix of hip-hop, dub, funk, roots, rock and reggae. They have rocked such events as the Red Bull Downhill Extreme, the Malibu Boats/Pro Wakeboard Tour Just Ride Series, Action Sport Retailer industry show, the Vans Triple Crown of Snowboarding, U.S. Open of Surfing, Reggae on the River, and Burning Man Festival.Over at Aspen Mountain, the closing party begins at 3 p.m. The Ben Diamond Band will take the stage from 3:30 to 5:30 at the base of the mountain, where a beer garden will also be set up. The same storm that’s poised to blanket Aspen with 6-10 inches should slam Summit County, where resorts could get 14-28 inches of new snow by Monday morning. If there’s any consolation to Aspen’s early closing, the resorts will probably be skiing well for another few weeks, if you’re willing to skin or hike. If nothing else, it’s a good way to stay on your skis until the backcountry corns up.
