RICO – A rescue team from San Miguel County carried an injured Westminster man 2,000-feet down 14,159-foot El Diente overnight to a point where a helicopter could fly him to Telluride.A news release identified the man as Ronald Deffenbaugh, 51. It said he had injured his left leg near the top of the mountain’s north face Friday. The peak is in neighboring Dolores County but it does not have an alpine rescue team.The Telluride Clinic said he was treated and released Saturday morning.San Miguel Sheriff Bill Masters said Deffenbaugh and his 18-year-old son used a cell phone to call to call for help.Helicopters capable of reaching the site were not available. Commercial helicopters carried the rescue team to within several thousand feet of the victim.
