On the Run: Trout hash, yum
Running the Basalt half-marathon was, for me, all about Café Bernard’s trout hash. This isn’t an advertisement, this is the truth. It’s one of those breakfast dishes that is entirely too delicious and addicting. Hmm, still sounds like ad copy. Well, whatever, it really is that way. It’s potatoes, smoked trout and red onions all sautéed together, with a nice, runny, over-easy egg on top and toast on the side. I have to admit that the first time I got it, I was sort of taking a chance. It was one of those menu items that led to serious decision trouble between trying something new and going for old favorites such as eggs Benedict or a tomato, avocado and cheddar omelet. That first time kept me coming back. This time around was even better because we got perfect seats for parade watching. At first, I rated the parade at about a 6. My girlfriend Piper, on the other hand, said it was perfect – Priuses, cute kids on bikes, candy, fire engines, and it only lasted about 15 minutes. I couldn’t help but agree. The trout hash was also well-deserved. I had gotten up around 6 a.m., drank some water, ate a banana and cruised down to Basalt. I signed up for the race, got in a school bus and headed up to the start. Then it was a relatively quick hour and 22 minutes back to Basalt. On the way, I saw fishermen and thought about trout hash. I also saw a hummingbird, a Y of geese and a lot of rushing water – all good things. There was good food at the end of the race, but I saved my appetite, limped over to Bernard’s after the raffle and settled down to one of life’s little, but glorious pleasures.
