On the Road

The explosion in road cycling could be attributed to many things: love of speed, love of expensive gear, love of Lycra, if you’re good enough Sheryl Crow will love you.But when it gets down to it, it’s just plain fun.But sometimes it isn’t. Like changing flats in the rain or blazing heat, or slogging up hills beyond your ability.Apparently it’s a sport of contradictions. Cases in point from a few of On the Road’s favorite cycling quotes gleaned from the Web:”Nothing compares to the simple pleasure of a bike ride.” John F. Kennedy Or:”To be a cyclist is to be a student of pain. … at cycling’s core lies pain, hard and bitter as the pit inside a juicy peach…” Scott Martin”It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” Ernest HemingwayOr:”I never look to right or left, never notice a flower, never see a view – get hot, juicy, red – like a grilled chop. Get me on that machine and I have to go. I go scorching along the road, and cursing aloud at myself for doing it.” H.G. Wells, “The Wheels of Chance””Bicycling is the nearest approximation I know to the flight of birds. The airplane simply carries a man on its back like an obedient Pegasus; it gives him no wings of his own.” Louis J. Helle Jr., “Spring in Washington”Or:”This is not Disneyland, or Hollywood. I’ll give you an example: I’ve read that I flew up the hills and mountains of France. But you don’t fly up a hill. You struggle slowly and painfully up a hill, and maybe, if you work very hard, you get to the top ahead of everybody else.” Lance Armstrong
