On the River: Switch blade

CVR Dowd Chutes Kayak BH 4-20
AP | Vail Daily

There’s a sharp new blade in my quiver and it’s ready to carve up some rapids. The rows of new paddles at Glenwood Canyon Kayaks’ sale last weekend proved too tempting to pass up. So my old trusty, which has dipped into rivers from Western Colorado to Western North Carolina and the Atlantic Ocean, will take a back seat this year after nine seasons. And a shiny (not for long) red Werner will be in hand Monday for this season’s maiden voyage (late start – it’s still so cold).Just in time for the peak, which snowpack experts anticipate will hit local rivers in late May. It’s supposed to all come down in one big flush – like those scary hotel toilets you have to stand back from or run the risk of getting sucked down. So get out to your favorite run or play spot and enjoy it while it lasts. Here’s what some area (and not-so-area) rivers were running at on Friday.Colorado (South Canyon): 6,410 cubic feet per secondColorado (Shoshone): 3,990 cfsColorado (Westwater): 11,000 cfsColorado (Gore Canyon): 1,440 cfsRoaring Fork (Cemetery/Pink to Black): 2,320 cfsRoaring Fork (Slaughterhouse/Toothache): 408 cfsCrystal (all runs): 669 cfsEagle (Dowd Chute): 897 cfsTaylor (Taylor Canyon): 318 cfsArkansas (Browns Canyon): 592 cfsCache la Poudre (all runs): 425 cfs
