On the Hill: The wait is over

Steve Benson

I’ve been sulking for weeks. But I’m done now, really. After all, maybe I do have a problem, as my girlfriend suggests.”I’m really worried about you,” she said the other night. “It’s like you’re obsessive-compulsive … you need to stop worrying about the weather and snow.”I’ve spent too much time on my computer staring with red eyes at satellite and radar imagery, searching for the next fat storm to spin into Colorado. I’ve cursed the mud, gravel and dead grass outside my window. I’ve tasted face shots in my sleep, only to realize it’s just cotton mouth. And I’ve awoken too often from the haze of powder-white dreams, where the world is always deep, soft and silent. It all started in October, when the snow slut resorts in Utah’s Wasatch Range got hammered with disgustingly gluttonous dumps. It got worse when the Sierra Nevada was buried under 8 feet of snow. In Aspen, we got the skinny leftovers. All fall, I’ve skinned over thin, rotten snow and lied to myself that it’s worth it. I’ve ignored the sound of rocks eating my base and the sight of grass stuck in my bindings. And I’ve waited for that monster dump that smothers the earth, erases the brown and muffles the sounds of the world. But I’m over it, because things could be worse. We could have no snow at all, we could have a terrible snowmaking system or we could live where there are no mountains. But we don’t.I’m over it, because today I get to ski, and that’s all that really matters.
