On the hill: Putting the OW in Powderhorn
SNOWMASS – I put the OW into the Powderhorn trail at Snowmass Sunday.
I was enjoying a delightful day skiing with my daughter. She’s working on bumps so I picked Garrett’s Gulch and Powderhorn after we warmed up with some cruisers on the Big Burn. (By the way, the groomers are really showing what they can do now that they have some snow to work with. The snow was so soft on the groomed trails of the Burn that it was like flying down a gigantic goose-feather pillow.)
We negotiated the top part of Powderhorn with ease. The bumps were either just forming or weren’t massive yet. They were ideal for her psyche. About halfway down the trail pinches a bit narrower, funneling the traffic into less terrain. The bumps there were much bigger. Plus there is a double fall line that always makes a run down Powderhorn interesting.
I usually go my own way when I ski with my daughter, stop a ways down the slope and let her progress at her own speed. As I did so on Sunday, I went into a deep trough between moguls, started flailing around and took a hard face plant. It was one of those falls where smacking your helmet is of little concern because you’ve got pain screaming from a different part of your body. In this case, I somehow bent my thumb back even though it was wrapped around a pole. For a brief instant, I thought it was broken but soon realized I could wiggle it. It turned out fine – just minor swelling and bruising, but man did it hurt for a while.
I don’t know what it is about skiing at Snowmass that snake bites me. The only ski injury I’ve suffered of any significance was a sterno-clevicular separation a few years ago. That came on a relatively easy trail as well.
I guess it’s a case of expect it when you least expect it.
