On the hill: Just one more

ASPEN – You know how they say that the only way to get in shape to ski is to ski?

I’m here to tell you it’s true – at least when it comes to skiing a long day in deep powder.

Wednesday on the mountain was amazing: one of the few bona fide powder days we’ve had this season (or at least that I’ve had the good fortune to ski).

But after two laps on the gondola, I was feeling it. A few more runs, and I was actually hurting a bit. And I even had on these fancy powder boards – the Icelantic Shaman, which look more like water skis with a shovel on the front than alpine skis.

What’s funny is that I thought I had skied a fair amount this season. Sure, the conditions weren’t great to start. And yes, we’ve had company in town that kept me on the groomers more than I might have liked. But still, I have been skiing.

Apparently I don’t necessarily need to ski more often but to ski more powder and more steep and deep terrain. It shouldn’t be difficult: The Dumps are finally skiing great, and there still were fresh lines to be found on the Shoulder of Bell well past noon Wednesday.

Which brings me to another saying (though I usually find myself saying this one at the bars): “Just one more, and I gotta go.”

On Wednesday, I said this a few times. Thankfully, I was talking about ski runs, so the hangover will be confined to a sore knee – and an overwhelming desire for it to keep on snowing.
