On the hill: I hear nice things about the winter

ASPEN – When does the snow come?

I’m on pins and needles here. I understand and enjoy the breathtaking sights that occur this time of year, which include Aspen Mountain ablaze with color. But being new to town, all I keep hearing is, “you just wait ’til the season.”

I’ve been told this so many times by everyone from 25-year Aspen residents to CMC students and even once or twice from an Aspen barkeep.

I’m on pins and needles. Growing up in Denver, I had neither the time nor the money to spend on skiing or snowboarding. I still don’t necessarily have the money, but at least now I have the time, seeing as the lifts are within walking distance away and not a wake-up-at-5-in-the-morning-to-drive-multiple-hours away.

Being broke, I stumbled upon an equipment issue. Lucky for me, my best friend, who relocated to Phoenix, lent me his brand new snowboard. He obviously has no use for it, and I have no problem benefiting from his nonsensical decision to move to a desert. But that board sits idle in my apartment – I’m on pins and needles.

I have been able to scrounge up some of the proper clothing, and being new to the scene I am not sure what to expect along the lines of “style.” I’ll look stupid rolling down the hill regardless of what I’m wearing.

Needless to say, I’m ready.

I am still enjoying the mixture of the ever-more-present brisk fall air and the lingering summer warmth, but all I keep hearing is “you just wait ’til the season,” and I can’t.
