On the Hill: Gone skiing

It felt good to take my skis off the rack, grab skins, transceiver, shovel and probe, and head for the slopes. Saturday was perfect for skiing, as the hundreds who were at the top of Independence Pass after it reopened would suggest. I was amazed, after an early morning hike up to one of the easily accessible pitches near the pass, at how good the snow was. Facing the early morning sun, the slope had just softened enough for our first run and was firm underneath with an inch of corn. It made for perfect wide-open GS turns that extended down into an easy slope at the bottom and a relatively quick hike back up. The view from the top was perfect, with lazy clouds rolling over and snowy peaks all around. Little dots of people were dropping off many of the nearby heights as much as a two or three ridges away. When we were sheltered from the breeze, little more than a T-shirt and shorts were required, while the breeze cooled enough for a light jacket. By the second run, the way up was a veritable highway, and the snow was slightly slushier but only felt like a bit more corn on top. I couldn’t help laughing on the way down. After only a month, I would probably welcome the ski season back again. Unfortunately, this season only lasts for another week or two, so get the turns in while you can.
