On the Hill: Agony of da feet

ASPEN ” Aspen Highlands was either going to be empty or packed on Saturday.

While the sunny weather last week had some putting the final wax on their skis, preparing them for a summer of storage, plenty of people came out to Highlands. Ski shuttles were standing-room only.

Just upon thinking it was time for fly-fishing and hiking, getting one last taste of mashed-potato moguls down Highlands bowl reawakened my never-satiated skiing soul. Unfortunately my feet beg to differ.

Like many people in ski towns across the country, alpine ski boots have altered the shape of my feet. Bone spurs and bunionettes (affectionately called the “sixth toe”) plague many a skier. While punching out the boot and adding footbeds help, I have yet to find someone who has found a perfect system.

In a haven such as Aspen, such feet can be a badge of honor as proof of days spent on the slopes. Unfortunately for my Bostonian cousin getting married in August, I’ll be the bridesmaid who’ll have photos taken from the ankle up. Many a city-dweller has looked with horror at my poor peds. So I’d rather ruin my feet with ski boots, not stilettos.

Mud season can be the perfect time to get such bone spurs removed. I myself am planning on seeing about getting a package deal.
