On the Fly: The Pan is hot

The Roaring Fork River is still high, and the Fryingpan is still hot.But the Fork grows clearer by the day and anglers were nailing trout on streamers near Carbondale earlier this week, according to Art Rowell, manager at Fryingpan Anglers in Basalt. This week, the shop is putting boats back on the Fork, Rowell reports, and Taylor Creek Fly Shop in Basalt will do the same this weekend, running trips out of Basalt and Carbondale. Still-high flows will make the Fork challenging to fish (it was running at more than 1,000 cubic feet per second below Aspen on Wednesday morning, and about 3,800 cfs in Glenwood Springs), but anglers should find action close to the banks and in the pockets of quiet water, predicts Will Sands, Taylor Creek guide and manager. He suggests golden stone nymphs, San Juan worms, 20-inchers and green drake nymphs for the Fork. The dam-controlled Pan, flowing at a gentle 110 cfs or so Wednesday, is fishing consistently well throughout the midday – Sands says 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., while Rowell suggests 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.”The Pan has been the hot spot,” Sands said.During the day, blue-wing olives, RS-2s, batwing emergers and small biot baetis are the call, he said.Nymphing remains the best bet, but watch for an extended blue-wing olive hatch if the skies turn overcast and rainy. The middle and lower sections of the river have seen some evening caddis action, as well, but the fishing has been less consistent. Hit it right before dusk, Rowell advises. For local fishing reports and other angling information, go to http://www.aspentimes.com/fishing.
