`Old Boys’ kick off 33rd annual Ruggerfest weekend

Aspen Times Staff Report

The over-45 “Old Boys” players launched a weekend of hard-hitting rugby action in Aspen yesterday at Wagner Park, kicking off the 33rd annual Ruggerfest.

The California Bald Eagles over-45 club went undefeated (3-0) in yesterday’s four-team round robin-style tournament and advanced to Sunday’s final against the Florida Old Boys, who went 2-1 yesterday.

This morning, the over-35 “Old Boy” action gets under way at Wagner and Rio Grande Park. Fifteen teams, including the Aspen Gentlemen “Old Boys,” will compete in a single-elimination tournament from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. today.

In the premier division, the 12-team field will clash all day Saturday at Wagner and Rio Grande. The two finalists will advance to Sunday’s final.

“Aspen’s side should be very good,” said Ruggerfest chairman Tim Francis. “The Denver Barbarians and Kansas City Blues are strong too. Those three teams will be the favorites.”

Wagner Park will host all the final and consolation matches Sunday, beginning at 12:15 p.m. The main event of the weekend, the men’s final, begins at 3:30 p.m.

The Gents have won 10 Ruggerfest crowns in the event’s 33-year history, including the last four years straight.
