Oh, what a night

Dear Editor:

The crowd at the Hotel Lenado last Sunday night witnessed a near perfect evening of Live Poetry Night. President of the Aspen Poets’ Society, Ink and host of the night, Kim Nuzzo, opened the monthly session by announcing that the Poets’ Society was recently granted its 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status, thus opening the door for enhanced activities and permanence in the community.

Then, part-time local Jon Lyman, ski instructor, singer/songwriter and poet, enchanted the audience with songs of his beloved Alaska. The open-mic portion of the evening brought a wide range of poetic expression read by many regular participants and a welcome number of new voices. The evening ended with a multi-media presentation by longtime local and denizen of Aspen Mountain, Peter “Rabbit” Bisset, who wowed the audience with a blend of the spoken word, photographs and music. It was an exemplary session as it embodied the very essence of the Aspen Poets’ Society’s mission: to promote the writing and reading of original poetry.

The only bittersweet moment was when Ryan Johnson, a Live Poetry Night participant since its inception in 2006, announced his departure from Aspen and return to Harvard to pursue a Ph.D. (We will all miss you, Ryan, but wish you the very best.) Yes, a near perfect night.
