Offer of ride under investigation

ASPEN – The Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an incident Monday afternoon near the Aspen campus of Colorado Mountain College, where a 13-year-old girl claims a male motorist offered her a ride.
Sheriff Joe DiSalvo said the girl “did the right thing” by not entering the vehicle, reportedly a black or dark-blue Subaru. The girl contacted her mother, who then called authorities.
The girl’s mother told deputies that her daughter was walking along the road when the motorist approached her. She said that the unfamiliar man asked her to get in the car. When she declined, he said, “I insist,” according to information the mother provided the Sheriff’s Office.
There was no physical contact between the two, DiSalvo said.
“It sounds like he was definitely trying to get her into the car,” DiSalvo said.
The sheriff said he “does not think anything nefarious” was happening but noted that the matter remains under investigation.

The Sheriff’s Office performed a search of registered sex offenders in Pitkin County, DiSalvo said. None of their information indicated that any of them drive a vehicle matching the description provided by the girl. Registered sex offenders are required by law to provide, among other things, their home addresses and vehicles registered under their name.
