Off-season travelers clog airport parking

Aspen Times Staff Report

With the long-awaited off-season at hand, locals are apparently fleeing town in droves – and clogging airport parking lots in the process.

Both the long-term and short-term parking lots at the Aspen/Pitkin County Airport were nearly full last weekend, prompting an airport official to advise travelers to begin their journey with a bus or taxi ride to the airport.

Airport Director Scott Smith said the long-term lot looked more like it usually does in July, with every spot taken on Friday and only a few open on Saturday. Smith said there was so much demand, that the short-term lot had to be used for long-term parking.

“It’s very unusual,” said Smith, who has worked at the airport for nine years. “Usually we don’t see anything like this, except on the Fourth of July.”

Smith is urging people to take public transportation to the airport. Those who insist on driving, however, should call 920-1482 to see if any parking is available.
