Obituary: Marybelle S. Robinson

Aspen ski pioneer Marybelle “Merbie” Schaefer Robinson died March 21, 1999 in Denver. She was 85 years old.

She was born in Denver on Sept. 21, 1913. Her grandparents had been pioneer settlers in Denver. She attended Corona Grade School, St. Mary’s Academy, Kent School for Girls, Loretto Heights College, and Denver University.

In 1937, she married F. George Robinson, chairman of the Robinson Brick Co., a 120-year-old Denver company. F. George “Porry” Robinson was also one of the founders of the Aspen Ski Co. The Robinsons began skiing in Aspen in 1946, riding the boat tow to its terminus and then hiking up the mountain to the top of Roch Run and racing down. They have maintained a second home in Aspen since 1947.

Merbie was a member of the Garden Club of Denver, past president of the Monday Forum, a member of Gamma Phi Beta, the Junior League of Denver, and St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church.

She was past director of the Denver Arthritis Board, the Kent School Board of Trustees, and the Margery Reed Mayo Board of Trustees.

A memorial service is planned this morning at the Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Denver.
